TRANSFORMATION OF FREE AND OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS: GOVERNANCE BETWEEN THE CATHEDRAL AND BAZAAR

ABSTRACT It is common for community-based free software projects to be associated with an organizational scenario that resembles “a bazaar more than a cathedral,” and differ from the traditional, or ‘bureaucratic’ way of organizing work. This paper analyzes governance these organizations perspective their structure control, considering development trajectory three in Brazil. Results show constant need produce modern technologies gives rise external pressures promote change - albeit temporary projects, making them resemble cathedral bazaar. Governance does not follow cycle sequential improvement; it changes depending on actors present, such as sponsors. suggests strategic flexible deal acquisition allocation resources. described here varies along spectrum (in)formality allows both production models exist same organization at different periods.
